How Graphics Are Installed

Once your graphics have been printed, it’s time to apply them to a wall, floor, vehicle, window, or other space. For the purposes of this article we’re going to focus on fleet graphics, but the installation process is the basically the same for other surfaces. Vehicles graphics are trickier to install given compound curves, headlights, door handles, and other features that need to be taken into account.

First, the car needs to be cleaned and completely dry. It’s important to remove as much dirt and oily residue to allow the graphics to adhere to the surface smoothly. The vehicle paint must be in good condition with no pealing or oxidation prior to installation. Freshly painted equipment must be allowed to dry properly before installation.

While decals can be applied outdoors under the right conditions, applying a full wrap vehicle or large decals indoors is strongly recommended due to weather. Once, we had to rent an airplane hanger to install a full-wrap on a large motor home.

Installers compare blueprints of the graphics to the vehicle itself. They line up the graphics on the vehicle. They carefully position the graphics on the vehicle, repositioning as needed.

Once the graphics are placed, the installer uses a squeegee to release air from underneath the decal. Heat is then applied to the decal to conform the material to curves and vehicle body lines. The heat activates the adhesive, essentially locking it into place.

After applying heat to the graphic, the installer can pull off the paper application tape to reveal the installed graphics beneath.

Ensuring your graphics are installed properly is vital to their longevity, which is why we maintain a network of highly skilled applicators nationwide.
